The history of snow in North Carolina can be traced back to the late 18th century when the first European settlers arrived in the area. In fact, the winter of 1783-1784, known as the "Hard Winter," saw significant snowfall and low temperatures throughout the state, causing widespread hardship for the settlers.

Over the next few centuries, snowfall in North Carolina remained relatively consistent, with occasional heavy snowstorms and cold snaps. However, it wasn't until the 20th century that the state began to see a decrease in snowfall. This trend has continued in recent decades, with the Triangle region seeing less and less snowfall each year. Well, that was until Raleigh’s great snowfall of 2000….

A recent history of snow in Raleigh, NC | These are the 5 most memorable snow storms since 2000

1. Raleigh’s great snowfall of 2000 | Raleigh Snowmageddon

On Jan. 25, 2000, Raleigh experienced a record-breaking snowstorm that lasted the entire day, with a total accumulation of 20.3 inches of snow. Dubbed the Raleigh snowmageddon or the Raleigh snowpocalypse, snowfall began on the evening of Monday, Jan. 24, and lasted until the following day, Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Piles of snow didn't melt for weeks. Power outages and blocked roads were also an issue for several days after the storm.

2. January 3rd, 2002

10.8 inches of snow dumped on the Triangle on Jan. 3, 2002. Governor Mike Easley urged North Carolina residents to stay home after the storm and to stay off the roads. Instead, he encouraged everyone to have fun with the family by building a snowman or going sledding with the kids. The Carolinas experienced widespread power outages and travel disruptions, and temperatures plummeted during the duration of the storm.

3. 2010 white Christmas

When was the last time the Triangle saw a white Christmas?
The 2010 white Christmas storm was an historic winter storm that hit Raleigh, NC, and the Triangle in December 2010. The snow started to fall early on Sunday morning, and by Monday morning, Raleigh was blanketed with over 12 inches of snow.

Individuals hoping for a white Christmas were granted their wish, as Mother Nature spread up to 12 inches of snow across parts of the Triangle and Central North Carolina.

In February 2014, a powerful nor'easter wreaked havoc across the Southern and East Coast regions of the United States, leaving a blanket of up to one foot of snow and hazardous icy conditions. This major storm caused severe destruction to the affected areas.

Only 3.3 inches of snow was recorded at RDU, so the accumulation was not record-breaking, however, the rate at which it fell made the journey home more hazardous than a typical commute.

The real reason this storm sticks in so many people's memory is due to the memes that came from a woman's photo documenting the incredibly chaotic outcome of Raleighites trying to navigate in the snow. The memes were pretty creative

5. Winter weather dumped snow on Raleigh Dec. 9, 2018

This intense winter storm dumped snow across North Carolina on Dec. 9, 2018. Up to 11 inches fell in parts of the Triangle before changing to rain. About 200,000 people lost power. After the storm cleared out, the temps dropped into the 20’s. Black ice was a concern for much of the Triangle region because of this.

How do you prepare for snow in NC? | What should I stock up on for snow?

In order to prepare for the next snow storm in Raleigh, it is important to take the necessary precautions. Make sure your vehicle is well-maintained and has the appropriate tires. Fill up your gas tank in advance of the storm too. Also, check winter advisories. It might be best to just stay put!

Consider stocking up on:

  • Food like bread, eggs, and produce. Canned foods and anything preserved in jars are great here too.
  • Grilling supplies so you can actually cook food if the power goes out.
  • Lots of warm clothing and blankets to keep you warm. Frostbite and hypothermia can be possible if your power goes out.
  • A generator or alternate power source in case of an outage (this goes for other types of storms too).
Check the forecast regularly and plan accordingly. Clear snow and ice from your sidewalks and driveway, and make sure to have sand, salt, or other ice-melting material on hand. Stay informed about road and school closures, and have a plan for communication in case of an emergency. Preparing for the next snow storm in Raleigh is critical for staying safe.
