Canes beat Islanders 6-3, will face Rangers in second round

For the fourth season in a row the Carolina Hurricanes advance to the second round. The Canes took care of a persistent New York Islanders team with three goals in the third period, 6-3 the final.

With the Rangers looming in the second round the Canes wasted no time in game five. Teuvo Teravainen scored top shelf on pass from Seth Jarvis 1:23 into the game to give the Canes the early lead.

Andrei Svehcknikov has been one of Carolina's better players this series and finally has a goal to show for it. At 3:13 into the period Svechnikov scored from in close on the power play to give Carolina a quick 2-0 lead.

Hockey moves so fast blink and you might miss it, the Islanders got on the board less than forty five seconds later on a power play goal by Mike Reilly to cut the lead to 2-1.

Game five continued to check off items on the hockey bingo card with a penalty shot at 13:22 into the period for Evgeny Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov has been quiet since scoring the first goal of the series but showed his elite puck handling skill on his signature slow and steady approach on the PK to give Carolina 3-1 lead. Canes outshot the Islanders 21-4 in the first period.

Islanders not going down without a fight. 3:47 into the 2nd period Brock Nelson finished an odd man rush beating Freddie Andersen five hole from the slot to make it 3-2.

The Islanders continued to play with desperation in the second period cashing in again in the final minute of the period. Freddie Andersen got out of position and fell down allowing Casey Cizikas to score on a wide open night and tie the game at 3 heading into the third. Shots after two periods were 30 for the Canes to 15 for the Islanders.

Just like in Game 2, the Hurricanes came alive in the third period. 4:36 into the final 20 minutes, Jack Drury found the back of the net for his first career playoff goal, with assists from Brady Skjei and Martin Necas to give the Canes a 4-3 lead. The Canes won the faceoff after the goal and eight seconds later, Stefan Noesen scored a backhanded goal with assists from Skjei (again) and Kuznetsov. Shades of Jordan Martinook. Canes extended the lead to two goals, 5-3.

Seth Jarvis added an empty-net goal with less than two minutes remaining for a cherry on top. the Hurricanes advance after being the Islanders in five games, 6-3 the final of game five. The Hurricanes will face the New York Rangers, the Presidents' Trophy winners in round two.
