There is new hope for people with epilepsy, a debilitating medical condition that affects millions around the world.

Annette Adkins, a 60 year old woman from Portland Oregon has spent the last decade terrified. A seizure could come at any moment. Some days, you know, when you're having seizures so often you just, it's just hard to know how is my life going to go. In 2014. Annette was diagnosed with epilepsy, but despite taking four different medications, we're still having 14 seizures a month. Globally, 50 million people struggle with seizures and about a third of them are like Annette medications just don't work. It can be really devastating. You know, I have patients who had to quit their jobs because they lost their driver's license. I have patients with young Children who can't feel comfortable taking care of their own young Children alone. But now doctors are testing a first of its kind therapy using stem cells. This therapy offers us the potential to essentially store that balance of excitation and inhibition in that part of the brain to be able to calm or ideally stop the seizures. And currently we don't have a therapy that allows us to do that. Here's how it works. Seizures can happen when certain parts of the brain get too excited and start firing uncontrollably. So the cells work to calm the brain down by producing Gaba a neurotransmitter that restores balance in the brain. There is a lot of excitatory activity that's causing spontaneous seizures. I got a chance to see the procedure firsthand. When I went into the operating room at the University of California San Diego and watched the third patient ever to have this done. Early data presented shows promising results, a 90% reduction in seizures in the first two patients treated so far. People think of seizures like, oh, you know, it's 1 to 2 minutes of a seizure, 2 to 3 times a month. It's like what 678 minutes out of your life in a month. But the people spend 99% of their time trying to avoid those 678 minutes and that really impacts their quality of life. The company plans to study whether the therapy can also treat other brain conditions like Alzheimer's. I think these patients are incredibly brave to be a part of a trial. You know, where we don't know for sure what the end result is. Cinc Annette underwent the procedure last October. She's had just one seizure since and says she finally has her life back. We're going to be capable of doing the things in life that we haven't really been confident to do over the last, you know, since 2014

New seizure treatment offers hope for people with epilepsy 

A group of good Samaritans helped a mother whose child was having an unexpected seizure.


It was a sunny Saturday morning at Highland Park. A perfect day for the Waddle family to make their annual trip to the Lilac Festival. Just like one of those moments where you realize it's a happy family. We're having a great day. And in one second, your day changes and it's drastic. And it's about 20 minutes after this picture was taken, the family sat down to have lunch in their toddler. Sam began to act sleepy. So we thought it's been a busy day for him, fall asleep on us while he's eating lunch and then his head tilted again. And then the second time it tilted, his eyes rolled back in his head and he completely started to convulse, his whole body started shaking. Sam had never had a seizure before his mom, Alicia ran for help. So I just picked him up immediately and ran down the hill screaming. My son is having a seizure. And then all of these people came running towards me immediately among them, a pediatric nurse and another mom who knew exactly what to do because her son has seizures. That woman sitting right there told me get him on his side, you know, like make sure his mouth is open, you know, doing all of these things, showing me what to do with his body to keep him safe. I didn't know that if she wasn't there, you know, she helped me keep my son safe the entire time he was having a seizure. Those strangers helped keep her calm and kept an eye on Sam until an ambulance could navigate its way through the festival crowds. Now, Sam is feeling better back to his playful self and ready to turn two in a few days. His mom and dad are filled with gratitude for the good Samaritans who emerged from the crowds on Saturday. And I just want them to know like Sam is healthy and he's happy and he's our playful little boy because they were able to come and help us in our time and need without even thinking of themselves in a drop of a hat. Everyone dropped everything for our son and I just want people to know how thankful we are for that.
