The Durham County Sheriff's Office has released new statistics on the nature of gun-related incidents so far in 2022.

From Jan. 1 to June 30, Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said data indicates they've experienced 134 incidents involving guns.

The first six months of the year, there were:

  • 108 total number of firearms seized
  • 18 total number of firearms reported stolen
  • eight total number of firearms recovered/found

Additionally, there were 10 stolen firearms from homes/businesses or individuals, three stolen from unsecured vehicles and two stolen from secured motor vehicles.

“The latest data indicates our “Strike Team” and our DCSO Anti-Crime and Narcotics Unit continues to make process in strategically fighting crime across Durham County," Birkhead said. "When comparing these numbers to the same categories from 2020 and 2021, we are on track to seize more firearms in 2022, contrasted with last year.”

In 'Durham Under Fire,' a recent documentary produced by WRAL, our team found that more than 1,100 shootings took place in The Bull City over the past year.
