VANDER, N.C. — Cape Fear's hope for a co-conference title is still alive.

The Colts' girls soccer team kept Jack Britt off the board for the final 75 minutes of Friday's contest to come away with a 2-1 win.

Cape Fear (13-4-1, 10-1) is tied with Purnell Swett atop the United 8 4A/3A standings. If both win out, they'd be co-champs of the league.

Jack Britt (9-7-2, 7-5) was poised to disrupt some of that with the way the game started.

Tiona Meacham scored her fifth goal of the year, chesting down a cross from Kaylen Sprague and volleying it off the bounce. The ball had too much heat on it for the keeper to handle at close range.

The Buccanneers led 1-0 just five minutes into the game.

The Colts found an answer almost right away with Kayia Starling's rocket from just outside the box deflecting off the keeper's mitts and in to tie it 1-1 in the 10th minute.

Just before halftime, Cape Fear scored what held up as the game-winner.

Grace Sherbert's cross deflected off a Jack Britt player and Emma Parson — a part-time goalkeeper — one-timed it off the crossbar and into the back of the net in the 38th minute.

Cape Fear entered the week ranked ninth in the 910 area code rankings.
