Women's Lacrosse: North Carolina pulls away in the third quarter, beats Duke

North Carolina has now beat Duke 15 consecutive times in women's lacrosse, with the No. 15 Tar Heels beating the No. 25 Blue Devils 16-11 in the regular season finale on Thursday. After a 3-3 start in the first quarter, North Carolina scored three more times, ending the first 15 minutes up 6-3.

Duke came to play in the second quarter, outscoring the Tar Heels 4-2 to cut the UNC lead to 9-8 after the end of the first half.

The third quarter is where UNC really pulled away, outscoring the Blue Devils 6-2.

Caroline Godine, Darcy Felter and Liv Pikiell led the way with three goals each for UNC. Godine added three assists as well. The Tar Heels finish the season at 10-5, 6-3 in conference play. North Carolina won three-straight games to end the regular season.

Caittlyn Wurzburger (two goals and one assist) is now fifth in program history for career points with 244, passing assistant coach Marie McCool.

For the Blue Devils, Carly Bernstein was the leading scorer, in fact, she led all scorers in the match with four goals. The Blue Devils finish the season at 10-7, 7-3 in ACC play. Duke won four of its final six games to end the season.

The ACC women's lacrosse championship begins on Sunday in Charlotte. North Carolina, the 4-seed, will play 5-seed Virginia at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. 6-seed Duke will play 3-seed Boston College at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
