The shortened MLB Draft's first round was televised on Wednesday night, and three Triangle players went in the first 27 picks. Patrick Bailey led the way for NC State at No. 13, while Duke's Bryce Jarvis became the highest pick in program history, going No. 18 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. UNC first baseman Aaron Sabato rounded out the trio, going No. 27 to the Minnesota Twins.

NC State baseball coach Elliott Avent joined The Adam Gold Show to talk about his former players in this week's MLB Draft, seniors that considered coming back next year, counting on everything being the same next year in terms of scholarship allowances, pushing the beginning of the baseball season back, why the MLB labor disputes are a bad look and a proposal for a return to MLB.

Patrick Bailey: It's definitely weird to see, but it's a weird time in our world right now 

and I appreciate you taking time off course. Basically, can you kind of tell us what you've been doing? You know, normally you're getting ready, you know, for the postseason and you're working on you're playing. But obviously you're not right now. So what you been doing to kind of stay in shape and stay tuned? Yeah, I have been fortunate up and staying rally, and I've got a place it toe workout hit. Uh, so I've been able to stay in shape and keep swinging a little, but, uh, that's out of that. Have been, you know, playing a lot. We're golf and Rome hanging out with my fiance a lot. So cool. Thanks. All right. Um, married you want? Go ahead. Can you hear me? Yeah. Just tell me a little bit about all the uncertainty that's kind of happening right now with the MLB. How's that going for you? Like, how are you handling that? Um, I'm gonna circling. Weird. But it's something that you know, since knowing the drought's gonna happen. That hasn't really I've been too prevalent just cause, you know, been kind of thinking about the draft more than anything on then. You know, after the draft and hope that I can get picked up by somebody that no kind of get down in and try to figure out gonna What's the next step for draft guys and pro guys and what not? What's your reaction to just all the new regulations that they've proposed as well? You know, like new spitting things like that? Yeah. It's definitely weird to see, but, you know, this is a weird time in our world right now. I think could be interesting to see what they could do. Toe kind of get baseball going again. And, um, you know, that could be good for everybody. Thanks. All right. Uh, Justin, my going to go. Hey, Patrick. Um, obviously getting prepared for an MLB draft in Corona virus pandemic. It's kind of a weird time. What have you been doing, toe? Just stay in baseball shape. I know. You know, basketball players are trying to play pick up games where they can. Football players are trying to lift weights in their home garage. What? What do you do to stay in baseball shape through all this with so much closure? Yeah. I mean, I guess that earlier we got. Unfortunately, I have a place that I could go ahead and work out. Um, so, you know, besides not playing any games, um, you know, my life is a athlete has kind of been somewhat normal and based on a schedule. So it's been, you know, I've been very fortunate to this time to have a place that I can keep working and, you know, just get better. So are you able to hit off tees or get some live pitches in still batting practice? Yeah. I mean, a little bit of both of you have been hidden with, um, Carl Wilson, whose, uh, I think he's the Triple A hitting coach for the Bulls. Now. He played at ST. So it's been a lot of fun and really good for me, toe do, um, and then the other, some local guys around that I have had some kind of live babies that I've stepped in and peddle books, so thank you. All right. Uh, Joe. Hey, Patrick, this is Joe Serero from the News and record in Greensboro. Um, you said in the video interview that you've heard from nine or 10 teams in the major leagues organizations what they telling you that they like about your skill set? And what questions, if any, do they have about what they want to see from you? Um, I mean, typically kind of the strings for me is kind of the defensive side of the game with, you know, commanding a pitching stuff and call him on game. And I'm kind of being sound back there. And then, you know, Heading is, you know, they see a switch hitter that has a little bit apart from both sides and on kind of thing that I've been working on. And, you know, teams want to continue to see me. Progress through is just kind of the hitting ability. And, you know, it's something that, even though it sucks that the season's over, it's something of a neighbor worked really hard on right now. These past few months without playing games is just working on my swing, and I'm trying to get it out. Thank you. Uh, my Patrick, obviously very unusual, because normally for college you get drafted, and then you'd be stunned somewhere to a facility low a ball high a ball. Whatever have you been? Um, you know, given any inclination about what might happen after you get drafted? We have no idea. I figured they would probably figure out the big leagues before they were about us. Um I mean, yeah, we haven't heard anything. So it could potentially be a situation where, you know, you hear your name called and then you're kind of just in limbo. Yeah. I mean, pretty much anything right now is a lot of speculation, so I don't think anything's for sure. All right. Uh, Jonas, imagine you said, uh, supporting the life of the athlete. Things have remained somewhat normal with no games. And how important hasn't been to keep up somewhere routine. Kind of your body in shape and ready whenever you start playing again. It has been huge. Um, you know, those stay in shape, keep working out, getting stronger. And I just said about my swimming Just been able to work more mechanic space with, You know, not being in season has been nice, and, you know, it sucks that we're not playing, but just trying to take advantage of kind of what I could do during this time. All right. James Patrick and James Siegen from the athletic. Your high school and college coaches both remark about how quickly you kind of took over managing the pitching staff and Colin Pictures and whatnot. How do you see that transition playing out? Ah, in pro ball. And what do you kind of prepared for? What adjustments are things you have to learn there. Yeah. I mean, I think it will. Might be a little tough for just cause bulls. And you don't really know how long you're gonna be with certain teams, but you just have done in high school and college. You just go in, um, and just try to build relationships with especially pictures. But everybody, I think that's what kind of starts is. You know, build that respect between each other and you try to create that relationship and trust that no picture skin trust when I put down and you don't trust what I have to say. All right. Uh, Charlie. Hey, Patrick, It's smart. The crazy circumstance we're in now when you do hear your name called isn't gonna be any less magical or have need everything like it would have If if everything was normal. I mean, I don't think he'll be a less matter. Cool has been a dream of mine since I was a kid playing t ball on, um, you know, that's kind of Ah, you know, the starting line Starting flying my dream to play in the major leagues, But I think it will be a pretty special moment. Still, uh, back to Mary. I'm just curious if there is a point when you were a young baseball player, maybe it was later on that you were like, I could make a career out of this. And when was that? I was probably for myself, for your high school. Um, that was my first year. Wesleyan and I had a pretty good year and not somewhere. I started getting recruited by local schools. And, you know, that's kind of when I figured that, you know, I had some talent, and then I could continue to hope we play this game for a while. All right. Uh, actor Mike Patrick, I only bring this up because you just referenced it. So you're getting ready for the draft. But your fiance, How's that wedding planning going during this time? She got it all knocked out right away in January. So We've been very fortunate. Get everything now, then and set up a probably been pretty stressful if we had some things to do already, there's it's things to do. Uh, so that's a few months down the road. So yes, November's our wedding day. So, uh, back to Joe. Hey, Patrick, you mentioned Wesley. And, uh, how much did plan for Scott Davis and staff there and being around some of the talented players, they're prepare you for N. C. State and for the pro career that you're going to embark on soon. It was huge. It was kind of one of the big reasons that I decided to go from being home schooled. Weston was kind of the baseball program they had. You know, Coach Davis built their, um, and to be able to play with, you know, some of my best friends, their elite college levels obviously helped me kind of get ready for N. C State. Then obviously NC state, you know, hoping me and prepare me for hope for the next up in pro ball. Thank you back to James since you mentioned the teams looking at you offensively and look having hoping to see further development and the fact you've been able to work on mechanics not being in season. What do you feel like? You have been ableto progress in that aspect during this time. There's been some just, like, mechanic stuff with especially my left handed swing that I felt like my hands kind of got tied back kind of toward my shoulder, and I kind of had cashed out, start my swing and kind of pull off with the front Children. So just tryingto, you know, clears face for my hands to work. Um, just trying to get kind of more direction. Um, you know, kind of try to get the barrel in the plane and keep it in the plane as long as possible and, you know, for their own. And that's something that we've been focused on right now. Uh, back to Charlie. You're on mute after you, the kind of player that is always mentioned. You knew you could maybe be a pro in your sophomore high school. Do you have to build up your confidence at that level of them when you get to stake? Did you have to prove to yourself that you could play it a C C level and you anticipate the same thing at the pros. Are you always kind of know your, um, I think it definitely a certain levels. You kind of have to make adjustments to just the style of play and just the level of play obviously coming in from a really good high school and really good, you know, travel program that helped me through that. But there were still some adjustments that I had to make early are in school. And, um, you know, I think that's something that I'll definitely have to make adjustments at the next level with something that I've kind of proved that I was able to do it in two State. I don't really think that things will be much different in the next level. Miss Eddie insights into the The madness of Elliot Events. He's obviously unique character. We know him to be a character. You guys see a different side of them, but I'm sure we, as the media do any great coach stories you could care. Um, I don't really know if there's one particular story, but I think one thing that people might not see is just how much he cared for his players. You know, I've heard a lot of stories of I'm just, you know, getting up and the middle of night What not and go helping out a player and whether he's had a flat tire or something. And, you know, that's the kind of guy he is. He cares about us more than anybody in. Yeah, I mean, I've really seen at the past three years is how much he cares about us and cares about me and cares about Leah and cares about just our families. It's really, really impressive to see what kind of guy is all right. Uh, back to Joe. I'm sorry. A lot of the mock drafts that I've seen have you going in the 12 to 20 range. Even though it seems like you're the consensus top catching prospect in the draft, you think maybe major league teams or maybe undervaluing the position a little bit right now? Uh, no idea. You know, try to stay away from that stuff and just kind of focused on what I can control. And you will be fortunate. Whatever team decides to pick me, then I'll be over. Be ready and get going with himself will be happy. Has any team more than the others reached out to you and wanted to talk? Or is it kind of evened out at this point? No, it's pretty even, You know, there's been, you know, I think around 10 or 11 teams that have reached out and wanted us, you know what we're doing right now. And, you know, I think we're going to get to know those organizations. And what not, but not really in a team in particular Camden, a fatter Camden with technician. So what, the season being cut short? You know, there's a lot of teammates and coaches that you might have thought you had a couple more months left with. Um, have you guys kind of stayed in contact with all your teammates and coaches? And can you kind of talk through the emotions of not being able to go back to finish the season with them? Yeah, I mean, I'd say that was definitely probably the hardest part with everything going on and I really being canceled, you know, never really sunk in with me until and everybody started going home, and that's when I was like, Dang like this is this is over. Like, I might have to replay with these guys again. And it was one heck of a ride. And, you know, I really enjoy the relationships that we built on, you know, obviously the old stay in touch and keep building those relationships with. Yeah, I was That was deaf. In the hardest part, everybody started leaving. Uh, all right, back to Joe. Um, what are you looking forward to most about being a professional baseball player? And what are you gonna miss the most about being an NC state player? Um, I think what I'm looking for the most it's just continue toe get around baseball, guys, You know, you learned from everybody in. You know, that's one thing I enjoy about NC State is the amount of just knowledge and information, and I've learned there. I think I'll continue toe develop and learn new things through, you know, Pro Bowl and different levels. And, you know, being around different people and again just doing more relationships with guys. I think that's the thing that I'll miss the most. NC state is the atmosphere that the fans brought. Just the relationships you're able to put up with your peers? Uh, James, actually keeping a catcher for so long throughout high school college, and your coaches talk about the appetite for information you kind of have back there. What appeals to you so much about that position? What? What? When did your passion for that kind of first get started? Um, it was back in she probably middle school. I played at the North Carolina Baseball Academy with Scott Bank, and he, uh, gave pitching lessons, and I lived, like, a minute from there. I was still cashing at the time, and, um, you would call me over it and, you know, you give lessons, toe, you know, local college guys can You don't want to catch himself. I got back there and, uh, you know, it was catching college guys in 7 8/9 grade. That kind of of, actually at that age, you know, freaking out cause I'm catching this, you know, 18 1920 year old guy. And I think that's kind of what fueled the fire for, you know, getting behind the plate and really enjoy just kind of learning about kind of the pitching side of things through Bankhead and the mechanical stuff on the field. What? You know, I love doing, and that's working with pictures and trying to figure out how to get the best out of him. All right, Uh, anybody else? Yeah, real quick. Uh, Patrick, you were thought to be a first round pick this time. Gifts and CVS 17. You were thought to be a first round pick coming into the season. Do you feel if you have played a full season that you could have maybe improve your draft stock? Possibly. You never know. I mean, I was off like I was off to a good start. I thought I was gonna, you know, continue to play well, but, you know, it's is what it is. It happened, and, you know, we got to roll with it.
