GREENSBORO, N.C. — Two small earthquakes shook things up a bit in Guilford County overnight Tuesday, not too far from Greensboro.

The first earthquake happened around 2:19 a.m., and the second happened just minutes later.

The US Geological Survey reported they rated about a 2.0 on the Richter scale.

The tremors happened around McLeansville, just northeast of Greensboro.

Some people in the Triad are reporting they felt shaking in the middle of the night.

How often do earthquakes shake up NC?

Damage-causing earthquakes are very rare in North Carolina; however, the state has faced a handful of memorable and powerful quakes that have been largely forgotten by history.

Dating back to 1735, there have been 22 damage-causing earthquakes in North Carolina, including an earthquake in 2020, when a 5.1 quake shook Sparta, NC.

Just as recently as this past June, portions of western NC experienced seven earthquakes within a two-week period, all within a mile of each other.
There's even a mountain in North Carolina named after a series of earthquakes in the 1800s that settlers mistook for the end of the world.
