SO LAST NIGHT WE TALKED ABOUT SOME RECORDS REQUEST THAT WE MADE HERE AT WRAL TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS. ALL ACROSS OUR AREA TO LEARN HOW MANY BOOKS HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM OUR SCHOOLS OVER THE LAST 2 YEARS. AND IT'S A LOT, FOR INSTANCE, JUST IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, THEY'VE REMOVED MORE THAN 100 BOOKS SINCE OCTOBER. AND MOST OF THOSE BOOKS INVOLVED DEALINGS IN TOPICS LIKE RACE, GENDER AND SEXUALITY, WHICH ARE THE HOT BUTTON TOPICS OF THE DAY D WROTE ME AND SAID, DO YOU WANT A BOOK TO TELL YOUR CHILD WHAT GENDER THEY SHOULD BE NOW I HEAR THIS ARGUMENT A LOT. MAYBE MAYBE YOU DO TOO. THIS FEAR THAT STUDENTS WILL BE CONFUSED ABOUT THEIR GENDER IF THEY READ A BOOK THAT HAS A TRANSGENDER CHARACTER OR STORY LINE. AND WHEN I HEAR THIS ARGUMENT, I WAS JUST ASKED THE PERSON WITH THAT. APPLY TO THEM IF YOU READ A BOOK WITH A TRANSGENDER PROTAGONIST WHEN YOU WERE 13 IS IS THAT WHAT WOULD WHAT IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN TO TURN YOUR LIFE UPSIDE DOWN? WOULD YOU THE UNSURE OF YOUR GENDER TODAY OR CONVINCED YOU ARE IN OPPOSITE GENDER BECAUSE OF THAT BOOK THAT YOU READ WHEN YOU WERE 13. OR DO YOU THINK YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU READ WHEN YOU WERE 13, YOU WOULDN'T BE CONVINCED THAT YOU ARE A DIFFERENT GENDER BECAUSE OF THE BOOK. I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE ARGUMENT WHEN WE FOLLOW UP ON THESE E-MAILS IN MORE IN DEPTH NEXT WEEK LIKE THIS. WHEN I GOT FROM CHRIS, HE SAID THIS WAS EASY. DAN, TAKE THE BOOK THAT MOMS GROUPS SAID WAS AND JUST SHOW THE PARTS ON YOUR NEW SEGMENT THAT WILL CONTROVERSIAL. IF YOU CAN'T SHOW IT, IT DOESN'T BELONG IN A CHILDREN'S LIBRARY. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT ON THAT COMMENT FROM CHRIS? I HAVE A BUNCH, BUT I DO WANT TO ORGANIZE MY THOUGHTS BEFORE GOING A BIT DEEPER INTO IT. HERE'S AN E-MAIL WE GOT FROM ROBIN WHO IS A RETIRED SCHOOL LIBRARIAN WHO EXPLAINED THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR BOOKS SAYING SCHOOL LIBRARIANS IN NORTH CAROLINA ARE TRAINED IN COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT HAVE SELECTION POLICIES FOR WAS INCLUDED IN THEIR COLLECTIONS SCHOOL LIBRARIANS READ REVIEWS. THEY ATTEND CONFERENCES WHERE WE MEET AND TALK WITH AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS. NOW TO THIS. I SPOKE TO A LAW PROFESSOR ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LIBRARIANS CHOOSING NOT TO DISPLAY A BOOK AND A SCHOOL BOARD REMOVING A BOOK ONCE IT'S ALREADY ON THE SHELVES. IT'S SOMETHING THAT THE SUPREME COURT HAS CONSIDERED AND DISCUSSED. HOPEFULLY YOU WILL JOIN IN ON THIS DISCUSSION AS WELL. I'm meteorologist, Kat Campbell in the wr a severe weather center here with a more in depth. Look at your weekend rain chances a lot of questions given that it's trending toward a pretty unsettled weekend. The good news I have for you is it's not a washout. A washout would mean that it would rain all day long. We're not expecting that this is going to be more in waves of rain that we see. The better rain chances are likely to come later in the day. But check in on the radar if you're about to head out into an event, I encourage you. Open up the wr weather app, check in on the dual Doppler 5000 radar before you head out and about. And because there are periods of rain, likely each day, you are going to want to have an indoor backup plan available in case that rain lines up with your outdoor plans. We finally got in some high resolution model data for Saturday. So I want to talk a little bit more about the rain timeline for Saturday, 79 the high Sunday. It's only 70 both days. We could see some storms around as we look hour by hour at our rain chances though, it's about a 30% chance Saturday morning. We should see that round move out pretty quickly though. And then later in the afternoon into the evening, that's when rain chances begin to climb again. Here's a closer look at that high resolution future cast during the day, Friday were dry as we get into Friday. Late afternoon into the evening, we could see a couple of showers and storms may even be between about nine pm and midnight that we have the best chance for rain though on Friday, as we look ahead to Saturday morning, some of that round of rain is still around early on. We should see that kind of move out. But with this warm across the area that could trigger a few showers and storms to develop pretty much all throughout the day because we have that front nearby. We should see a band of some showers move through at some point during the afternoon and evening. So try to make the most of the dry weather while you can. Here's a closer look at your playground planner for Friday. It's dry during the first part of the day. Only a 30% chance of a shower storm at two o'clock as we get toward four or 56 o'clock. That's when I think we have a better chance of an isolated storm. But keep in mind it's be pretty isolated Friday. Night is a better chance of rain and storms. And then Saturday night as well, we could see some lingering rain into Sunday. So if you are headed to the Bembe Cultural Arts Festival on Saturday, just try to get there early. The earlier you get there, the drier, it's likely to be your seven day forecast. Unsettled for the weekend. We do see quite a bit of cloud cover lingering on Monday. It's a bit cooler with highs. Only in the mid seventies. The eighties are back next week and by the middle and end of the week, we should be right back in the mid to upper eighties.
