WILMINGTON, N.C. — As much as 4 inches of snow fell in areas in and around New Hanover County on Wednesday, and many called the snow a welcome sight.

As the sun rose over the Cape Fear River on Thursday, people ventured out to see the beauty left behind from the storm, and to find a cup of coffee.

"The strategy was, start with coffee. But what I have left is frozen," said Tony Peele.

With schools and government offices closed, some small business owners decided to follow suit and enjoy the snow day.

"We're just admiring the snow. We're relatively recent Wilmington transplants and never expected to see this here. So, it's great," said Caroline Fisher.

One snowboarder enjoyed using snow-covered streets as makeshift slopes.

"These conditions are ideal for this little hill," said Mark Nasca.

But nothing could rival the fun of the coastal kids who surfed their way down the city streets.

Vanessa Costa, a UNC-Wilmington exchange student from Brazil had never seen snow.

"Now, it has snowed and I have my boots," she said. "I'm a lucky girl."
