On Tuesday, the Wake County school board will consider whether to join a lawsuit against social media companies that claims they're having a negative impact on teenagers.

Educators say students have psychological damage because of social media, and that it's impacting students' learning and the classroom environment.

Attorneys for two law firms are presenting their arguments to the school board Tuesday night ahead of a planned vote.

Eleven other North Carolina school systems have already joined the lawsuit, including Cumberland, Johnston, Wilson, Moore and Wayne Counties.

Here are just a few of the things educators are saying about the impact on students and the school system:

  • Counselors are overwhelmed by a higher demand for help
  • Kids are distracted by social media during the school day
  • Teachers are spending more time disciplining students for actions related to social media
  • Schools are diverting educational resources to handle issues caused by the apps
WRAL News has reached out to social companies for comment. We’re waiting to hear back.

WRAL will provide updates on the outcome of the meeting Tuesday evening.
