RALEIGH, N.C. — A temporary boiler was installed on Wednesday at Shaw University's Dimple Newsome residence hall after students went a weekend without heat and days without hot water.

Although the heat was back on Monday, students living in the hall still had no running hot water.

In order to help alleviate the problem, the university says they have installed a temporary boiler.

The university says the water in the building will be shut off for some time Wednesday evening to transition the existing system to the temporary boiler. After that, hot water should return.

According to several Facebook posts from students and parents, the lack of hot water in the dorm has persisted for several weeks, starting from the winter break.

Students protested, asking the university to fix the hot water issue.

On campus, several students have protested asking the school to address and resolve the issue, saying "No justice, no peace: No hot water, no heat,"

The university released a statement Monday saying:

"Students residing in the Dimple Newsome dorm are safe and warm. The dorm is an older building, so the extremely cold weather is compromising the ability of its boiler system to simultaneously heat the living space and consistently provide hot water."

The spokesperson said the boiler system must cycle through the tanks to get hot water back to students' dorms.
