RALEIGH, N.C. — Despite last week's snow and freezing temperatures, the official first day of winter isn't even here yet.

If that isn't odd enough, the days leading up to Friday, Dec. 21 (the winter solstice) will feature plenty of sunshine and fall-like temperatures close to 60 degrees.

The warmer trend that set in Saturday will likely last through next weekend, according to WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell.

Sunday morning weather outlook

Sunday could see a high of 57 degrees, and Monday will be even warmer, with a high closer to 60 degrees. Any rain that falls Sunday should be out of the way by lunchtime, according to Campbell, and Monday will be beautiful, featuring plenty of sunshine and clear, blue skies.

According to Campbell, Monday will be the warmest day of the week before temperatures drop into the low 50s for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Despite those cooler temperatures, the Triangle likely won't see rain again until Thursday or Friday, both of which will feature a milder high in the mid 50s. After the rain clears away, the weekend before Christmas should be gorgeous.

"We might have a chance at our first dry weekend in awhile," said Campbell, referencing Saturday and the first official weekend of winter.
