WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Wake County School Board committee is expected on Monday to take up the issue of the number of school nurses and counselors available to each student and what schools can do to better improve that ratio.

The counselors, nurses and psychologists at school campuses are not only important for student health, but they are also seen as a safety measure to identify potential threats in schools.

The school committee was scheduled to hear proposals during its 3 p.m. meeting about different ways to match those health workers with students.

According to one plan, the proposal would assign a base number of counselors and nurses for each school and then add more support where it is needed. The idea is to make the most out of the counselors and nurses in the district.

Wake County board of commissioners allocated $2 million for schools to add to their ranks of trained nurses and counselors.
