WAKE FOREST, N.C. — In this busy shopping season, it can be difficult for smaller minority-owned businesses to stand out.

An expo this weekend in Wake Forest was intended to lift up those businesses by bringing them together.

Devita King-Patoskyy puts her acrylic art on everything. It is a passion she hopes to turn into a profit.

“It exploded into a business,” said King-Patoskyy.

To be successful, you need to be seen.

“Events like this help us get that exposure,” said King-Patoskyy.

The Buy Black Market Holiday Business Expo brings Black-owned businesses together.

The organizer, Rah-Mah Pelzer-Elue, said people are often surprised at how many are out there.

“We have Christmas toys, we have clothes, we have skincare, we have hair care,” said Pelzer-Elue.

The event is about more than making a sale though. Connections are made where business owners can build each other up.

By getting together like this, King-Patoskyy. hopes her small business will not stay small.

“This is still just the beginning for us," said King-Patoskyy. "We are still just looking to branch out and continue to grow.”

The expo ran through the weekend and wrapped up Sunday.

Over the years, similar events have highlighted hundreds of black-owned businesses.
