ZEBULON, N.C. — The Wake County Animal Center hosted an event providing low-coast wellness services for pets on Sunday.
Residents showed up to the Animal Center’s Eastern Regional Center in Zebulon for a chance to get their pets vaccinated at their annual Community Pet Day.

“For us, it’s important to keep the costs down,” Animal Center Community Outreach Manager Meagan Frost said. “The cost of living is going up and up, with no end in sight. We’re hoping to help people keep their pets.”

The shelter often has a waitlist for people unable to care for their pets. In January, the shelter paused animal surrenders due to a lack of shelter space.

The shelter says having these community events helps make pet ownership more affordable.

“We’re always glad to have a big turnout,” Veterinarian April Ward said. “I think of all the pets that we’re able to vaccinate. They’re less likely to get disease because we can provide that vaccine for them.”

Ward said while the demand was overwhelming at times. They’re glad they were there to help.

There will be three more events in 2024 for free vaccinations and microchipping for your pets.

  • Mar. 24: Wake County Northern Regional Center in Wake Forest
  • April 7: Dorcas Ministries, 187 High House Road in Cary
  • April 21: Wake County Southern Regional Center. 130 North Judd Parkway in Fuquay-Varina.
