To Down East communities, anchors represent strength in heartache

Many people Down East experienced the worst tragedy of their lives recently when a plane crashed off Drum Inlet, killing four boys and four adults, all with close ties to the area. For a while now, one of the area's symbols have been decorative aluminum anchors. They are mounted on nearly every building and often lighted at night. The anchors represent strength, which is especially needed now given the people's overwhelming heartache.
