Like the toppling of "Silent Sam" and a statue outside the old Durham County Courthouse in recent years, the removal of Confederate monuments from the State Capitol grounds over the weekend is part of a nationwide effort to promote equality and acceptance - two qualities the statues were historically meant to suppress.
