Duke
Carrawell: If I've got the number one pick, I'm taking Paolo
Duke associate head coach Chris Carrawell says Paolo Banchero should go number one overall in the draft and shares evaluations on the rest of Duke's prospects.
if you have a question, you hand raise feature will get to you and as always we'll post the post a video and send out quotes later this afternoon. So we'll get started to have any questions just Henry's feature and we'll start with speed wiseman steve, go ahead. Thanks mike. Hey chris how you doing this morning? Hey, let's first talk about Mark Williams if we could and the work he put in um from his freshman year to sophomore year to get him in position to where he performed so well at the combine last month in Chicago with his, his testing and his, You know, his, his body fat was like 4%. I mean he just addressed the work he did to get in that kind of shape. That's crazy that those numbers, we gotta check those numbers. 4% 5% man, that's that's incredible. But Mark was a joy to coach incredible year. Um and one of the things that I remember when Mark got this, you know, he ended the freshman year like playing at a high high level and unfortunately we weren't, we were not able to finish the season and so coming back this summer, last summer actually he wrote down goals, you know, things that he wanted to accomplish um for a sophomore year. And and we held, we held him accountable like we held him to that so that his standard, he wanted, he wanted to be player of the year. National defensive player of the year got close didn't get it, but it was was really close the defensive player year in the conference. Um Second team all conference. I'm not mistaken that right. 3rd uh third team close one of the top players in the in the in the congress but then you you go to the tournament run, Top five player in the tournament. You know he had a hell of a year force but he came to work every day steve every day. Uh the drills that we will put together you know these guys all wanna shoot threes and be Steph curry's and we told him that's not gonna happen like so we built it from the inside out like you gotta you gotta protect our paint, you gotta you gotta rebound and then you know he's an unbelievable finish. Er You know he showed that with his stroke from the free throw line and he was able to show that he can make jump shots which I think a lot of NBA teams don't know because he didn't really get to shoot a lot of them. But his potential is incredible. Really smart kid. And you know Mark Played in a week basketball league in in in Virginia for three years. Any transfer to I. M. G. And so his basketball best basketball is ahead of, It's ahead of him. He's really still young and so you're getting a player. I mean I believe it's gonna be a lottery pick but it was something like that when you see is what 20 about 25 you can have a player, he should be a starter in the NBA for the for a long time and a really good player make a lot of money and should be able to take me out to a few dinners, Brendan Marks go ahead. I think we lost. All right. Connor O'neill, go ahead chris I wanted to ask about paolo and he obviously came in with a lot of hype, but he met that hype, what goes into a player playing up to such high expectations and kind of, what was his journey that you saw from him for the past year? Man just came in right away, you know, just you look at his his his frame um 6-10-250 I think the thing, you know in the summertime and I noticed doing it throughout the course of the year, like like halfway through the year, I'm like man, he really got in tip top condition, you know, he was really, really in good shape and I say this about paolo because you know these these GMS call you scouts call you Paulo is a gym rat, he's a gym rat, I mean he's the guy you got kicked out of the out of the gym. And so I mean we're just, you know, for a young guy, You know, and he played 38, minutes a game, he'll come back and you know, he want to practice and get extra work done. He's like, yo man you gotta go, you gotta go and that's what I and he's a hoopers hoop and I say that meaning like a lot of these guys they play their workout, be in the gym and then they'll go home and play video games all day all day, 2K. Whatever you know whatever they're doing Pollo he I'm not saying he doesn't play video games but he's watching a lot to like the old school you know we play go outside and play and watch Magic Bird showing my age a little bit but like we were watching play play and watch Apollo is one of the one of the one of those guys, he he loves it man, he loves it. So you're getting a guy who puts in the work in the gym, unselfish teammate, I mean him and Zion since I've been back for the two guys that could have ego wise, could have been really bad teammates. Really selfish man. He was he was inclusive always big up in his teammates, you know a j have a great game, he's the happiest trev roach when dale martin, like really really selfless in that matter man. And so for him to have the type of year and you know final four you know we made the final four and he was he was the main piece Brendan. Are you there? B b you're killing me man, you're killing me, what are you doing bro what's going on man? Alright, Aaron beard, go ahead, hey chris um I wanted to follow up on paolo a little bit, is there a certain, I mean there were so many things he did well, particularly offensively in his game, is there an area or two you look and you say this is the most growth he made from when he arrived here to where you guys ended up? I know at one point he was talking about trying to assert himself with less finesse maybe imposes will physically on guys, was there an area that stood out to you said this is the biggest leap he made, he did and that was that was the biggest leap you know you get when you're the biggest guy in high school and you know you're able to with his frame just overpower in college, that's that's not gonna happen and so I thought a huge key for us, I thought last year was having theo john and base jones so you got you got two guys who are old man, they're old and they beat them up every day. So what happened was like he struggled a lot in the summertime, like we're playing in base with you know strip them a lot and body him and theo would do the same thing and they kept coming and I thought you know with the reps I thought he got he adjusted to that and and in turn you know in the games he was able to get to the foul line and play more physical and so as the year goes on, you know you get into the tournament, postseason conference tournament and then the N. C. A. Tournament and the games are battles man and he you could tell man he just you know through those practice reps and going against those guys after practice post practice he was able to adjust. So I thought that was the biggest adjustment for him was the physicality, he became more physical and then he started putting his shoulder into people as and you know and that frame you know you get a big dude, big dude and so he was able to adjust and have a like I said man unbelievable freshman year. We got this question from Brenda marks because apparently the athletic doesn't let its staff have audio on his laptop. So the question what part of windows came came the further shooting passing, while handling defense and how did he how did he accomplish that man? All the above B you know, and I tip my hat off to Wendell, he didn't rush the process. You know, he came in with a big time rep, you know Mcdonald's all american, one of the best players uh in his class in the country. And these guys after one year they're ready to and you know his his freshman year and in my day it would have been like a solid good year, you know? But now, you know, you hear the, you know, the outsider outsiders, the Naysayers like Man Mundell then sophomore year. I mean, do you do you really count that year? I mean, it was covid you counted. I'm not saying you don't, but like we had no fans in the building, that's huge. You know, these guys stayed in the hotel that the entire year and would come and it was tough not making any excuses. But the thing is b he didn't make any excuses either. He came back and when I tell you this guy was in the gym physically, because we thought watching this game that he had to become more athletic, you know, of course shooting. And like people we I said, look, man, you had one dunk this year, you know, that was on a breakaway, I don't count, you know, you should dunk that. So we thought he had to become more explosive quicker. And then he just got older. You know, when they'll steal the really young for his class. And so when you get older, you become more confident. And so you guys know the shots that he was passing up wide open shots. His first couple of years, man, he was shooting, he was knocking him down was no hesitation. Usually if he missed his first three point shot, freshman sophomore year, he would be hesitant and catch it and put it on. Now, it was just like he just kept firing away man and his leadership. Um, and he's worked out well man and for the draft, I mean, GM and scouts are hitting me like, yo this this guys, he's good at his measurements, seven ft wingspan has got great size always compared him to Malcolm Brogden, you know, I just, the, the big guard, you know, and Brogden got to to the pros and it was rookie of the year and made a lot of money I think when dale, although there kind of the same to me, you know, and so I see him having a heck of a career and you know, he, I think he's gonna show on that next level cause it's wide open, it's a little bit more space and another gym rat, I think he's gonna take off too, Jonathan. Levin go ahead. Hey coach, um so many of the top prospects in the draft have one um skill that they can really point to. Obviously Paulo has a bunch of those skills. Can you point to one thing that teams are really looking to borrow out of him? Yeah, I just think you see in the playoffs, Jonathan, when you get to the playoffs, you gotta have a guy who can make, who can create shots, you know, when the shot clock goes down, you got to be able to throw the ball to a guy and have him be able to create some Pollo can do that right now, He could do that right now and to me, he's the best player in the draft and that's not even a bias. Like you look at him, you look at him, I like in jane ivy, I think nothing against Jabari, I love chat, you know, but like those two guys for me Or like the two best players, Pollo has a complete package, Yeah, because he can't even prove on his jump shot and yeah, of course, but I remember Jayson Tatum didn't shoot a great three point percentage his year at Duke, I think he might have been around, they might have been around the same, but you can tell just the movement, the body type, his game is tailor made. Um And he'll continue to get better, he's 19, so They draft these guys now who they're gonna be when they're 20 for 25 years old and so with paolo now, he's gonna be good now. But you know the fact that he can create shots off the dribble, he became a better playmaker during a year, I think the sky's the limit, but he can create man, he can create for a nine guard and his size, he could create shots from the inside and out. That's rare. David Thompson, hey chris, good morning, hey, what's up man? You know, you've been around a lot of talent, a lot of great teams in your time. But to see that potentially five guys from this last year's team are gonna get drafted. I mean what does that just say about the talent that was in this building last year man. It was it was crazy, it was crazy, you know? It was it was weird though because Like AJ. was rated high, right coming coming, like you know, it's a top 10 pick but like we didn't see that in the beginning, you know, it was like this dude got a lot of work, he got, you know, he got a lot of work, you knew paolo, you knew paolo was but AJ he didn't start off with it. Um Mark, you saw some potential but he got a chance to be a lottery pick. I mean and so and then when deal you felt like if when dale could have a really good year, he'll have his chance, which he did. The one you didn't know about was Trevor, we thought Trevor was gonna be here man, like coming back and he came out man like the Kentucky game just, I mean he blew that game I thought, and when you had those games, there's certain games throughout the year day, you know, this Kentucky, that's the one of the games that the entire country is watching, right, we kick off the season, you're in Madison Square garden a lot of hype, then you have the Gonzaga game and you know, then Ohio State was kind of like yeah, it was a big time game, but you know, but you have those games, the Carolina games and stuff like that where if you sure will man. But I always go back to that, that Kentucky game where Apollo and when dale and those guys were cramping and he just, man, he was, he was a man. And so he's the youngest guy in the draft. Him and AJ are the youngest players in the draft. And so although you'd like to see these young guys like Trev, you want to come back. But you know these guys, man, he got a chance to be a first round pick. And so anytime you get that opportunity um, to have five guys, I played with four guys. So if they can, I want them to beat the record, I'll tell you that, you know, Trajan Elton will Avian colima Getty, I want them to, I want them to beat that and that would be, that would be a great thing for us and just shows that man. And so for us, everybody gets to see that. And so now when I go into a recruit's home or something man, you know, like I'm, hey I coach that guy and so you know, that helps brian horse, Hey coach again, thanks for taking the time. Um, you mentioned a J. And everyone knows that a J. Is a, you know, a knockdown shooter. But what else does he bring to the table for an NBA team brian, he's he's the best kid in the world, you know, he's the best kid in the world. So he's another guy that's uh you know you need like if you have a guy like that just I'm just talking about off the court before I hit the basketball, like good things gonna happen man. Like for us, I just like his energy. I mean this this kid held bible study classes with the team like midway through the year man, you know like we got a saturday game friday nights, bible bible study, you know, just his faith um always smiling, sometimes smiling like I don't there's no reason to smile but he's always got a smile on his face. Um just a beautiful kid. But the thing is A. J. Got a lot of game two, you know for us he had to play a role, you know, he had to play a role for us where his shooting was a weapon. And so we told him man just be the best shooter in the country. But as as these guys are seeing on the next level they come and watch him work out, he can he can go off the bounce, you know, and so you're getting a kid who can shoot, he's gonna be able to put the ball on the floor and create shots, his body, I don't even know if he understands his body, he built like a great Bill, similar building jimmy butler at this age and so his best basketball is ahead of them as well. And I always say this be I say always take the pro kid. It's in the genes man. Take the pro kid if it's a college, if you if your dad played in the N. B. A. And we're recruiting a kid take him because at least at the worst case scenario is gonna be 1000 point score, right? You're gonna have them in your program for four years, Gonna be 1000 points at the best. You're gonna get the A. J. Griffin's the Seth curry's you know like you're gonna get I'm telling you Dunleavy's. These guys are hard workers man, low maintenance hot basketball. I. Q. So A. J. Man. And and he he did all this with missing a year and a half in high school. You know, he missed a lot of time. So his best basketball is ahead of him as well. Thank you. That Welter go ahead morning chris um you know, we talk a lot about potential with guys like Chet Holmgren and Jabari smith. Jr it feels like to me for some reason Paulo's being penalized for being almost more of a polished product. Um Why do you think that is? That's a great question. I don't know why, you know I talked to Apollo the other day Like 25 minutes as long as I ever talked to him, you know like and we're talking, we're talking about that, like man, they're saying this seed, they're saying that they're saying this and you know, the NBA like those got their different, you know, they they're different up there and so with a guy like paolo, you kinda gotta break them down so to speak, you know, they're gonna see, they're gonna force something, you know, that's that's This guy is 19 years old man, Like 19. What player is they all got flaws, they all have flaws and and for Apollo, I guess you look at him and you look at his body type, he's the most developed physically, really no holes in this game besides, you know, you can say the shooting, you gotta become a more consistent shooter, but these guys are not finished products, man, it takes time and I think, I think, but that's that's that's part of it though, you know, that's part of the whole draft process, you know, they've been doing this for the they I think they love getting off on it to be honest with you, they love to create these storylines and narratives um which is good, which is good because now it's gonna keep a guy like paolo, you know, like it's gonna keep him in the gym sometimes if you like then you start maybe not, maybe you don't go as much, but it's it's motivation and so I I kinda like it a little bit, I hopefully that, answer your question, I don't know, I went on a tangent, but I mean that's, you know, you know how I do go ahead Hey coach, I was wondering kind of what the process was like with a guy like Trevor who was going, you know, he was in the predraft flow, but he hadn't really made that decision until it seemed like right until the last minute, what what kind of, what kind of information and guidance were you able to give him through the process and and how torn was he up until that last second? Really torn. He was, he was torn, man. I just, when these guys make the decision, you know, I just try to support them, You know, of course we want you back. You 100% said that plenty of times like we want you back, but but now that like once they make the decision to test, I'm 100% in support and so I don't, you know, you called them, I called them, check in, we call and check in on him. I used to call him late man, I hope you're doing okay. You ain't gotta hit me back. I know it's a busy time. It's a, it's a lot of pressure, A lot of anxiety that goes into all this man, like your, your your you want a ton of job interviews and he's, you know, that's a for an 18 year old kid, that's a lot. And so once they decide, I just say man whatever you need, I got you, you wanna talk, I'm here for you and you know all the way up to, he was torn, he was really torn because You know like I said Trevor was 18 man, you can you can come back and be one of the best players in the country or I say to all these guys, the NBA trumps everything I believe in all these guys, the ultimate goal more than anything is to make it to play in the N. B. A. And get drafted. So you can't get mad at the kid man who he's gonna play in the N. B. A. He's gonna get drafted hopefully first round, but even if he was to go second round a team is going to guarantee him because the potential was there And like I said in 34 years you can have a player who with his body type. He you know, gets in great condition, you know, improving those areas. You got a really good player by the time he's 22 years old. So I supported him, I talked to him but I don't beat him over the head with like man you need it because come on man, we got three more in Q. We'll get to those, let's start with J. B. Rigs morning coach, appreciate you taking out this time. Um there's a lot of talk about Jabari and chat and paolo, you know which one of those guys um is gonna end up going number one and I want you to kind of like take off your bias hat real quick and, and, and, and tell me Which one do you truly believe should be number one. And if it isn't Pollo um why what separates Jabari and chat from him? Or if it's the opposite, what separates Paulo from Chet and Jabari? Yeah, well jbl with uh I think the two best players, like I said in the draft that I've seen, I love keegan Murray, I love johnny Davis the kid, I think Catherine for Arizona, I think he's really good. Um but the two best players that I've seen this year, um Apollo and J. Knighten, you know, I love Jabari smith and I went to go see him a couple times, I was like, this kid is talented, but for me, the reason why Apollo, it's kind of like Tatum, I'm not saying he's jayson Tatum, I'm not saying I don't not putting that in there, but like Tatum, those guys could create their own shots with that size. Tatum 6, 8 6, Tatum 6, 9 with that size Pollo with that size being able to create his own shot, so you can post them, you can put them on an elbow, you can put them in the middle of the floor, he can get the rebound, he can initiate your offense and once he gets his, you know, once that becomes more consistent, you got a guy who can score all three levels and we can say yeah you gotta be able to guard right, but you get, you get paid in the NBA from from putting the ball in the hole and I just, I just believe that his game is tailor made for the N. B. A. It's the most complete And if I'm drafting a guy number one he gotta be able to go get it, go get it Jabari, he's good, he's good. But to me, he's more of a three and D guy, you know like a catch a shooter coming off screens and he has potential his way, I'm not knocking him chat hunger with his size, his frame with that hold up, what position is he? You know, chat is a big time player as well, not taking anything away from these guys, but for me, my unbiased opinion, I got the number one pick, I'm taking Pablo and then, and then we'll see what that and hey those guys might end up better, they might end up better. But damn boy, I'm telling you when I saw Tatum, man, I'm gonna give you all a story, we got time. We got time. Yeah, the story I was, I was at marquette and I was back for cake and this was gonna tatum was tatum, it was tatum matt jones and Jabari parker so the cat can we break the draft is over, I'm gonna go back to the hotel, take a nap before the dinner at night, right draft now I'm taking a nap but Tatum and Jabari and matt jones are getting up shots and then so I'm watching them, I'm like, I'm about to leave, but then I was like check it out, we're gonna play some warns, they play one on 11 on one from different spots. And I was like okay now this was Jabari, he's like the USA team, like he's coming back, he's fully recovered from his his first torn A. C. L. He's back, he's healthy, his weight is down, he's moving, he's like the Jabara of his freshman in his rookie year before he got hurt and I'm watching these guys play, I love matt jones national champion made big shots, He was just there though. He he was he was just the guy that was, that was just there. But Tatum and Jabari Parker man and this was Tatum hadn't played the game as a freshman this one, a freshman, they came early in May and they were going at it, they were playing spots and Jabari ended up winning most of the spots right? But Tatum was give him everything he wanted. And I remember tatum made one move and was like uh Jabari turned to me and like yo see well he nice And that's that's a guy that was the number two overall pick, he was like yo this kid he gave me that look like yo man, he's different and so that's when so that's how that's how I compare Apollo like these guys are different and Tatum had that different thing and follow the same thing. We got two more. Sorry, was that me? Mike mike. Yeah go ahead. Sorry, okay thanks. Hey chris good to see you again bro. Hey what's up Mike, it's been it's been a minute. You talked about how the draft now is for guys for 4-5 years from now and you know all these, I don't like I don't like it mike but that's what it is, I don't like yeah I'm just I'm just we're refreshing where these guys are gonna be in 4 to 5 years. All these players coming in have flaws, You just kind of describe Paulo, Paulo being as flawless as you can be coming in. What about a guy like Williams and and his flaws because his size and everything seems to me like he's a perfect fit for a team. I don't know like charlotte who could use some use some help on the interior with a high compete level and high shooting percentage and all that. Yeah yeah mike gotta go get him Jordan gotta get him man because you you pair him with a with a ball uh mellow, which one is in in in charlotte mellow man, that's he's he's alive right now, he can come in set a screen roll to the basket through a lot he's catching and finishing. He plays way above the rim. He's gonna be able to uh defend once he gets the thing with him he'll be able to defend at the rim. He has to get better in pick and roll defense, moving his feet has to get stronger and prove his base. But man the talent he can run he runs like a guard um the touch and so he will be able to one of those guys that can pick and pop and make shots. I just think man his the potential you know with being a live threat. Being able to defend at the rim has to get better and pick and rolls. But it's shooting is something that's underrated. Um And you're getting a guy who right now in the NBA game I tell I tell the guys that the scouts in the Gm like right now he can he can he can he can finish at the rim and the NBA game can protect the basket. And so now I mean that's pretty good and that's what that's what the bigs now that's what they get paid to do. They get paid to do those things and I think Mark I think Mark is the best center in the in the draft. I think he's the best center in the draft. But you know when you play on the team like we had I think that goes unnoticed. But he's gonna he's gonna surprise a lot of people as well. Thanks chris, good to see you. Good to see to our last question, go to Kyle Williams, Good morning coach. Um you spoke earlier about how going against theo, johns and bates, jones and practice health paolo, kind of speaking to A J Griffin and Trevor kills how they're going against window, more help improve them over the course of the season. It did count. Um, and and Roach and jeremy roach. So you got jeremy roach and Wendell, you know, we are practices. I used to love the five on five portions of our practice and when we split up teams, you know, because then, you know when like roaches going at Trevor picking them up, they going back a little wolf tickets been. So, you know, they're talking trash, you know, when Dale and AJ and then, you know, sometimes, you know, Apollo get matched up with some of these guys like, so you have some battles and practice and so that's where you see the development, a lot of, a lot of people cal they want to talk about like a player development, can you get these guys better? Yeah, I mean this basketball ain't rocket science, man. So we're gonna shoot some jumpers, we're going bald head and we're gonna do pads and all that stuff. But the best player development is when you go against each other like AJ got better because he was going against Lindale. That's why Mark Williams got better because he went against theo john that's player development, you know, and, and roach and kills going to each other and then Joey baker like, you know, he, you throw him in the mix. He, you got to guard him coming off screen. So I think the competition that we had in practice this year was at the highest level that we had since. Well, you know, going back to before Covid and so like I said, the Kobe year, you know, that was, that was different. But this year, man, the thing that the, the main reason why you're gonna be a good player, you gotta work on your game, you gotta work on your skills, but you gotta have somebody that's pushing you every day. And so Apollo, those young guys, they didn't know theO and base jones would work and those guys are good. Those guys may not, they're not gonna play in the NBA theO might have a chance basically. But those guys are old and they're old school college players and so they're getting pushed and our guys got better and they push each other because they were fighting. They were fighting for minutes. So like no, you got me today, like Corey McGeady used to get me back in the day now I'm getting you to tomorrow and in turn I got better. And so I think we had a lot of competition this year in practice. And so that's where you saw the growth in our team. Thank you. All right. Coach Carroll, really appreciate your time this morning. Thanks everybody for hopping on and we'll have quotes and video out later today. Thank you. Cool. Thank you. No problem. I remember those McGee.
