Bulls' Birling: 'The Coastal Plain League is what Minor League baseball used to be'
Mike Birling discusses why Capitol Broadcasting Company's acquisition of the CPL is so important.
okay, we have mike birling here joining us uh from the Durham bulls and, and now I guess it's gonna be mike birling of the Durham bulls and the Coastal Plains League. Um First off, what is your excitement level on, on just the added baseball? That's gonna be here with capital broadcast. Yeah, it's pretty exciting. We're, you know, we, we purchased the highly spring salamanders who are members of the Coastal Plain League going into the 2018 season. And it's just been a lot of fun. It's, it's, it's so different than minor league baseball. Um and I think it's just from the Goodman standpoint, it's the way baseball is so intertwined in, in communities. Um It's just so important. And, you know, these smaller communities where a lot of times, minor league baseball teams used to be there and they left for some of these bigger stadiums. Um, You know, the Coastal Plain League is, is kind of what minor league baseball used to be and you can have a lot more impact, not only in the communities, but you know, with the players, with these collegiate players and it's, it's been a lot of fun running the holly springs team and got to know a lot more about the petits in the Coastal Plain League and this, this was just the next step in in how we can kind of grow the game of baseball throughout the southeast. That's that's awesome. And then also along with it, you know, WRL announced or capital broadcasting announced. WRL sports plus. Is right now, is it the idea to have more of those games on that channel? Yeah, that's a that's a great point, and, and that's definitely been on our minds, as you all know, you know, content is king and And the more content you have the better. Um, so yeah, that is definitely something we want to look at long term is, is how we can or how can we, uh, you know, raise, raise the bar for all the teams. And there's, so there's 30 currently 13 teams in the league. Um, you know, we're we're gonna be looking for more markets throughout the southeast and um, you know, we're really excited about it. I was actually gonna be my next question. Um, I, I didn't know if you guys were thinking about expansion, but in what ways are you thinking about impacting the current markets that these teams are already in. But then, you know, how are you guys looking to, to grow beyond as this league is gonna, you know, come into the capitals capitals, you know, umbrella? Yeah. You hit on the head. The most important thing is, is strengthening the 13 teams that are currently in the league. You know, we think with the experience that we have running the Durham Bulls and, and uh, you know, just the the, what we have throughout my early baseball, all the different things, we've learned myself along with the Goodmans, that we can we can really lend some advice to some of these teams and, um, and and just try to strengthen it and help them understand that, you know, the baseball part of it is extremely important, but also the entertainment part is extremely important. And I think if we can, you know, help stabilize a lot of these teams, you know, then the next step would be, you know, how do we look at different markets? They would need to be. It's it's very important, especially with these college players. You know, we want to limit travel as much as possible. This isn't something that we want Guys taking, you know, 456 hour bus drive, that's not what this is about. This is about player safety, player health and wellness and the more we can kind of fit, fit, um, you know, cities into that, you know, the blueprint that we have. I think that's something that we'll look at going forward. But the biggest point is is how do we strengthen the 13 teams we do have after strengthening the teams. How do you think this helps to grow the game of baseball? And then also how do you think this helps to impact the local economies of these uh, these uh markets that these teams will be located in? Yeah, that's a great point. If you think of, you know, the blueprint that the coastal plain league is in, um, you know, there's there's not a lot of access to major league teams and you know, the more there's a lot of minor league teams, but the more we can get people to come out with their families to just watch the game of baseball. We all know that the the demographics of baseball is changing and baseball needs to do something about game times and pace of play, which I think is it's happening at the Durham Bulls level. You know, those are things that I think we can do to um you know, to hopefully, you know, change the game to more where the younger generation wants to come out to baseball games and wants to participate more baseball. So we can we can kind of do that in some of these smaller cities and smaller markets and really attach ourselves to the community because that's at the end of the day, that's what it's about, that's what it's always been about for us in Durham. That's what it's always been about for us in holly springs. And and that's what the Goodmans have, have, you know, have told me for years, you know, 24 years, I've been here, it's all about the community and partnerships and and that's what we're gonna do in these in these markets and and uh, you know, as minor league baseball changes, you know, and and markets open up, that kind of leaves the door for us to maybe possibly go in and and keep baseball alive in some of these smaller markets, of course, the petit family did an amazing job with the league now that the capital will own this, in what ways, and of course it's a traditionally broadcasting company. How does it, what ways will capital be able to take? Uh, change, I guess the presentation and how the Coastal Plain League is, is presented in its games uh, in the future. Yeah, that's it. With the Petits have, have done an amazing job, jerry, Pettit, uh, and and his sons, um, you know, what, what the, the ground work that they've done to really set this league up. It is, it is one of the top, everybody knows that the Cape Cod League, you know, the next league is really the Coastal Plain League and and we're fortunate to be purchasing a league that is on solid footing. Um, but you're right, the broadcasting side of our business, it's it's important you can see it in the ratings of all sporting events throughout, you know, the NFL MLB NHL, you name it N B A. You know, that that's that's something that we can add, we have that expertise and, and um, you know, that's something that once again is one of our kind of first initial things we can do is how do we get these broadcasts up to the standard where where fans want to watch them, you know, because currently right now a lot of it is the parents watching their kids from um from afar, but we want to make it bigger than that and I think we can lend our expertise to. That sounds good and of course, uh, you know, we, we love a lot more baseball. Let me ask you this as well, um, with this acquisition, does this mean that the folks who own the teams individually still individually own their teams or as capital and also buying all the teams? No, we, we, we just own the league. So the individual besides the holly springs team, the individual owners will retain it. We've, we've had great conversations with them. Um, I think they're all excited about capitol broadcasting company purchasing the league now. It's just a matter over the next year or so. Just really getting on the same page of what that next vision is as we move forward for, for the future of the CPL and we're going to work closely with those owners. Um, yeah, I'd be lying if I didn't say there's, you know, us purchasing more teams is, is probably probably something we would like to do. But that's not our initial uh, point. We want to try to work with the existing owners and make this league even better than it already is from the, from what the petits have accomplished. Sounds good. Sounds very exciting. And I can't wait to see where everything kind of lands mike birling from the Durham bulls, Thank you so much for joining us
