DURHAM, N.C. — A man and a woman died Monday when their SUV ran off a Durham street, struck a tree and caught fire, police said.

The Jeep Renegade was southbound on North Roxboro Street at about 2:30 p.m. when the crash occurred near Latta Road.

A Durham police officer responded quickly and tried to remove the two people inside the SUV, but the vehicle caught fire and was fully engulfed, according to police. The officer used two fire extinguishers but was unable to put the fire out.

Michela McKoy, 22, and Brandon Christopher Gray, 24, both of Durham, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV had been rented from Enterprise.

Several lanes of North Roxboro Street were closed between Macwood Road and Plantation Drive after the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
