Bob Ross breaks records in Rocky Mount

North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount is hosting what is advertised as "the world’s largest" exhibition of the paintings of Bob Ross.

For $15, the public can see more than 75 works by the creator and host of "The Joy of Painting" known for his poufy perm and permanently pleasant disposition. Admission is free for children under 5.

Robert Norman Ross, an American painter, art instructor and television host, showed the world how to paint on his PBS program that aired from 1983 to 1994.

Taking in the art on Tuesday was Bob Cassanova, from Rocky Mount, who has been a Bob Ross fan from his television days.

"His programs are just so soothing. You can sit down and relax and listen to the narrative and just enjoy it," he said.

As an artist, Cassanova connects deeply with Ross’s vision.

"I use a high-resolution camera for my work and with that you see details that you normally wouldn’t notice in real life, and what you see in his paintings is these amazing details," Cassanova said.

Courtney Moss, box office manager at the Dunn Center, said she’s been pleased with the turnout so far.

The exhibit has already welcomed guests young and old, from across the United States and one visitor from overseas.

“The dedication is there from all these people and all his fans," she said.

The event will run through Jan. 4, 2024. Tickets can be purchased here.
