A woman died Saturday morning after she was hit by a car while walking along U.S. Highway 70 West.

At 1:45 a.m., the Goldsboro Police Department and fire departments were dispatched to the report of a traffic crash involving a pedestrian on U.S. 70 West (W. Grantham Street) near Interstate 795.

It was determined that Leland Underhill and his wife, April Underhill, 41, of Goldsboro, were walking in the eastbound lane of U.S. 70 West next to the curb. The Underhills were pushing a shopping cart and another small cart, and they were both dressed in dark clothing. Leland Underhill was carrying a small flashlight.

A car traveling eastbound on U.S. 70 West struck April Underhill. Leland Underhill was not hit or injured in the crash.

The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with officers. She was later transported to UNC Health Wayne for minor injuries.

April Underhill was found lying along the south side of the highway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was determined that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. April Underhill was found to be in the roadway when she was struck.

The driver will not be charged.
