Woman describes getting kidnapped in Virginia, 146-mph chase that ended in Wendell

A woman will spend Thanksgiving at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh after she was kidnapped by her estranged boyfriend in Chesapeake, Virginia, driven across the state line and involved in a crash near Wendell.

Heather Oliver was in the passenger seat Sunday as her estranged boyfriend, Joshua Stokes, led law enforcement along Lizard Lick Road near U.S. Highway 64 at speeds that reached 146 mph in a 65-mph zone.

“I begged him to stop and pull the car over,” Oliver said.

Authorities found Oliver's purple Dodge Challenger with extensive damage. Stokes kidnapped Oliver from a shopping center in Chesapeake, Virginia, forcing her into her car, according to authorities.

“I was crying, and I said, ‘Please just slow down. You’re going to hurt somebody,’” Oliver said.

Oliver quietly dialed 911 on her phone and left it in the side of the car door.

Police in Virginia used cell phone technology to track the car as it sped through four North Carolina counties.

“He told me that I deserved to die,” Oliver said. “And he said that he wanted to die.”

“I mean, I had no idea what was going to happen,” Oliver continued.

Oliver said she unsuccessfully tried to grab the steering wheel at one point.

“That did not work,” she said.

A trooper hit the back of the Challenger during the chase.

“I blacked out from there,” Oliver said.

First responders rushed Oliver to the hospital, where she still has labored breathing.

“I have a broken rib,” Oliver said. “And I’m going to have a black eye, and they said I have contusions and bruises on my lungs.”

On Monday, a judge set a $300,000 secured bond for Stokes for domestic violence-related charges. Stokes also has pending charges out of Currituck County for felony flee to elude reckless driving and speeding. He's due back in court Dec. 13 in Currituck County. The judge set a secured bond in that case of $20,000.

Stokes has waived his rights to be extradited back to Virginia after his charges go through the justice system in Wake County.
