A woman was apparently killed by an alligator while walking her dog on Hilton Head Island Tuesday morning. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook about the attack.

According to that post, the woman, whose name was not released, was spotted at the edge of a lagoon. When deputies, fire rescue and community security approached her, "an alligator appeared and was guarding the woman," the sheriff's office wrote.

The animal was removed and the woman's body recovered.

The sheriff's office post went on to say, "Deputies learned that the woman was walking her dog earlier this morning when the attack occurred. It is not clear at this point where she was taken into the water."

This is the second fatal alligator attack in Beaufort County in less than a year, according to the sheriff's office. On August 15, 2022, an 88-year-old Sun City woman was attacked by an alligator at a lagoon near her home.
