A Lumberton woman was charged over the weekend with abusing the 65-year-old man she shared a home with.

Lumberton police said officers arrived at a home at 800 Whiteville Road at about 2:25 p.m. Saturday and found the man in bed, suffering from severe malnutrition and poor health as a result of unsanitary living conditions.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and was later taken to a second, undisclosed hospital because of the severity of his condition, police said.

Authorities said Lovia George, 43, who lived with the victim, failed to provide him with basic nutrition, hygiene and medical care.

George was charged with domestic abuse of a disabled or elderly person causing serious injury and domestic neglect of a disabled or elderly adult resulting in serious injury.

Police said Lovia was related to the victim, but did not say how authorities were tipped to his condition.

Lovia was being held under $25,000 bond and is scheduled to make her first court appearance July 30.
