Part of North Roxboro Street in Durham will be closed for six weeks to replace a section of water main.

Starting Monday, the City of Durham Water Management Department will replace the water main in the 2600 block of North Roxboro Street between Hammond Street and Lavender Avenue. During the replacement, North Roxboro Street will be reduced to two lanes — one northbound and one southbound — in the construction area.

Drivers are encouraged to use North Duke Street via West Murray Avenue and West Club Boulevard as an alternative route.

GoDurham Route 4 will maintain its existing schedule on North Roxboro Street with two bus stop closures. The bus stops on southbound Roxboro Street at Hammond Street and northbound Roxboro Street at Lavender Street. The nearest southbound stop on North Roxboro Street is one block north at North Roxboro Street and Maynard Avenue.

During the six-week project, crews will work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Crews will also work Saturdays as needed, a Durham spokesperson said.

In June, a water main break closed part of the street for hours. Drivers had to take a detour around the gushing water and through an adjacent neighborhood.
