Update: The car seat trade in event is ending Sept. 21 (9 days early) due to overwhelming participation.

According to a Walmart statement, "Due to the overwhelming response from our customers, we are quickly reaching capacity for this program. In less than one week, we estimate we will collect nearly 1 million car seats – or the equivalent of diverting over 200 million plastic bottles from landfills."

This means that they may be giving away $30 million in Walamrt gift cards with this promotion.

September is National Baby Safety Month, and Walmart is using the opportunity to collect old car seats.

From Monday, September 16 through September 21, customers can visit the Customer Service desk at participating stores to trade in the car seat their child has outgrown for a $30 Walmart gift card.

The superstore is partnering with recycling business Terracycle to help keep car seats out of landfills.

“Through the Walmart Car Seat Recycling Program, traditionally non-recyclable car seats are now nationally recyclable,” said Tom Szaky, CEO and Founder, TerraCycle. “We are proud to work with this forward-thinking company to offer families from coast-to-coast a way to give their car seat, the item that has kept their little ones safe, a second-life. Through this event, we expect to divert the plastic equivalent of approximately 35 million water bottles from landfills.”

According to Walmart, there is a trade-in limit of 2 car seats per household, any brand is accepted, and booster seats can't be turned in.

Nearly 4,000 U.S. locations are participating and the list is posted on the Walmart website. The event will run through Sept. 30.

Walmart is also offering an online only baby savings event with lowered prices on hundreds of items online. See all the details of the car seat trade-in offer and the baby savings event at Walmart.com HERE.
