How the pandemic affects your taxes

Taxpayers can get free face-to-face help from the IRS on Saturday at the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center at Brier Creek.

The office will be open for walk-ins Saturday, Feb. 12, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 7751 Brier Creek Parkway, close to where Brier Creek Parkway and T.W. Alexander Drive intersect.

During that time, people can walk in with questions. No appointments are needed. Face masks and social distancing will be required.

The following services will be offered:

  • Advance Child Tax Credit information and help
  • Online account assistance
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) renewal
  • IRS identity theft victim assistance
  • Payments - check or money order only (no cash will be accepted)
  • Refunds
  • Tax law questions
  • Transcripts and forms

Be prepared to bring the following items:

  • Government-issued photo identification
  • Social Security cards and/or ITINs for members of their household, including spouse and dependents (if applicable)
  • Any IRS letters or notices received and requested documents

Staff may also request a current mailing address, a current email address and bank account information if payments or refunds are addressed.

“This gives taxpayers an opportunity to ask questions and resolve a tax issue," said IRS spokesperson Stacy Engle.

People who need help preparing their tax returns can locate the nearest Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) site online or by calling 800-906-9887 to get free tax return preparation.

The income limit for VITA/TCE assistance is $58,000. To find a site operated by AARP Tax-Aide, taxpayers can visit the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 1-888-227-7669.
