Parents' concerns about moving students to new school to be addressed Tuesday

Parents in Wake County on Tuesday will get a chance to share their concerns about plans to reassign some students to new schools.

Alston Ridge Elementary School is one of 21 schools being considered in the reassignment proposal.

Parents who live in the Kitts Creek and Providence Place neighborhoods in Morrisville told WRAL News they were blindside by the plans.

"I mean, we've lived here in this community for 14 years," said Jennifer Therrien, who will have two kids on different schedules for the next several years. "To have four different schools within a five year period without even moving your home ... it's just challenging from a family unit perspective."

The schools considered for reassignment are currently overcrowded, according to the district.

Board members said the new plan will relieve overcrowding by moving some students to other nearby schools.

The student assignment plan was first introduced last week.

They said it also would reassign some neighborhoods to schools closer to them geographically, easing the commute for families and reducing the distance school buses have to travel.

However, the plan would require some students who are in traditional-calendar schools to move to year-round schools and vice versa.
