Felon removes ankle bracelet and leaves Wake courthouse

A man who ran from the Wake County Courthouse after a conviction last week was back in court Monday afternoon after having been recaptured.

Rakeem Brown, 32, of Knightdale, was tried and found guilty of felony assault by strangulation and assault on a female.

During a break between the reading of the verdict and the sentencing phase – to determine Brown's punishment – he left the courtroom and did not return, according to Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman.

Brown was wearing an ankle monitor during the trial. He was not in custody, so he was allowed to leave the courtroom without a bailiff during the recess, the Wake County Sheriff's Office said. He managed to get out of the courthouse and remove the bracelet.

Court documents state the next phase of Brown’s trial was conducted on Thursday without him being present. He was convicted that day of being a habitual felon. He was facing anywhere from 10-13 years in prison.

Brown was taken into custody one day later by deputies in Fayetteville. He was booked into the Wake County Jail without bond and was back in court Monday at 1:30 p.m.

"I think any hopes of him getting a lenient sentence have gone out the door with him," said local defense attorney Daniel Meier.
