Enjoy storytime at Wake County libraries

Being a stay-at-home mom is exhausting. Keeping the house running, entertaining and enriching the tiny humans, getting dinner on the table. But one thing we look forward to every week is a morning at our local library.

My baby girl, now a year old, doesn’t necessarily have the attention span for the stories but she loves the music and watching the “big” kids as they dance and participate. Most of all, she loves the bubble machine that the librarians pull out at the end of every storytime. We both enjoy these mornings so much and I am so grateful for all the wonderful programming that our library offers.

There are so many programs offered by our Wake County Public Libraries for all ages. Art projects, science activities, activities to encourage literacy, and a huge selection of books with thankfully easy renew processes.

I also feel very safe in regards to their COVID policies. All adults are masked and they limit the amount of people that can enter by giving out tickets for each story time. Xs are spaced out in the programming room to enforce social distancing and all the parents are very respectful of that.

Our local library is the Northeast Regional Library and here’s just a taste of some of the programming we’ve enjoyed.

  • Inside @ the Library for Young Children (storytime) - this is 15 minutes of stories and songs. Some WCPLs offer this programming outdoors as well.
  • Inside @ the Library for School Age - developed for your older children and scheduled around school hours, activities range from acrylic pouring to coding and so much more. Like the young children programming, there are some libraries that offer their programming outdoors.
  • K-2nd Adventures - K-2nd grade kids read, create, discover, and explore through play-based learning centers. Activities and topics will change weekly. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
  • Inside @ the Library for Teens - They are kicking off February with a celebration of black superheroes which is pretty fantastic.
  • Crafts - You can press flowers, turn a t-shirt into a tote, learn about watercolors or how to fold fancy ribbons. If art is your jam, the library has tons of options.
  • Book Discussions - If you need some motivation to finish a book, there are different book discussions across the county that offer a lovely evening of intellectual conversation.

There is so much thought, time, and energy put into library programming. If you’re curious what your local library has to offer, check out their event page and plan your next visit.
