Vote for Pullen Park for national honor
Pullen Park is nominated for a national award and it needs your votes to advance to the next round.
The Raleigh park is among the top 16 finalists the Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) network's "Best places in local government." Previous years have honored city halls, parks, libraries and water facilities.
Pullen Park is in a head-to-head bracket-style competition against Little Rock Central High School and Historic Mall, which has monuments and statues in honor of the "nine men and women who bravely walked through an angry mob to integrate the school in a time when race relations were pushed to the brink of war," according to the ELGL website.
In Pullen Park's award entry, it is noted as the first public park and first public pool in North Carolina as well as one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. The park is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year and its carousel, which is more than 100 years old, is still in use today.
"Today, Pullen Park is a snapshot of what local amusement parks use to provide for their communities," the entry notes.
Voting for this round will close on Friday at midnight Pacific Time (or 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time). An announcement on the winners will be made over the weekend and voting for the next round will open on Monday, March 21.
Pullen Park is a previous WRAL Voters' Choice Award winner for best park.
