Growing tension over Israel-Hamas War as students gather at NC State for vigil

A pro-Palestinian vigil was held Wednesday night on NC State’s Campus outside of the Talley Student Union.

Dozens of people attended the vigil, some holding signs and candles.

Roughly 2,800 Palestinians were killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza. More, however, are believed to be dead.

More than 1,400 people in Israel died in the Hamas attack. Most of the people killed on both sides have been civilians.

After his brief, high-stakes trip to Israel on Wednesday, President Joe Biden is expected to speak Thursday night about the American response to the war. President Biden is expected to ask Congress to approve $100 billion in emergency funds for the conflicts in Israel and Ukraine by the end of the week.

Students said they want to see the U.S. stop funding Israel’s military effort.

"This is, literally, an ethnic cleansing and a genocide," said Lara Yassin, a student in attendance. "To call it anything else would be doing an injustice to all the Palestinians in Gaza who have lost their lives."

While in Tel Aviv, the President stressed his support for Israel in its war against Hamas, while pledging humanitarian aid for Gaza.

Biden announced the U.S. will send $100 million in humanitarian aid to both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
