The towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro announced on Friday that vehicles will not be allowed in their joint holiday parade scheduled for Dec. 9, 2023

According to the Chapel Hill Arts and Culture’s parade participation form for “Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland,” this year’s parade will be "non-vehicular."

“We’re seeking community organizations with diverse cultural and faith traditions to participate in our first non-vehicular parade,” the application form said.

The town also said the elimination of vehicles is in line with the town’s environmental goals..

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro change comes two months after Raleigh canceled the use of vehicles in their 2023 Christmas Parade.

The city initially canceled the parade, saying it was doing so out of respect for the family of 11-year-old Hailey Brooks, who was hit and killed by a truck while she was dancing in the 2022 parade.

Brooks’ family disagreed with the decision, and a compromise was reached with the city and parade organizers to hold the parade without vehicles.

On Wednesday, organizers of the Raleigh Veterans Day Parade said that parade, scheduled for Nov. 11, would be canceled because vehicles are not allowed. A stationary ceremony will still take place in downtown Raleigh on Veterans Day.

On Wednesday, organizers of the Raleigh Veterans Day Parade said the parade was canceled. Organizers added there will be a stationary ceremony in its place.

The town of Zebulon will have a walk-through parade where attendees can walk through and see the floats.

WRAL News reached out to the city of Durham to see if vehicles will be allowed in their 2023 holiday parade and are waiting to hear back.
