Two people were charged with animal cruelty from an investigation into mistreatment of horses.

On Sept. 12, Cumberland County detectives looked into a case regarding animal cruelty that occurred at Witts End Quarter Horses in Fayetteville.

During their investigation, Cumberland County Animal Services seized numerous horses, including a 3-month-old baby foal. After going through the animal's medical records, it was discovered that the foal sustained felony-level injuries.

Austin Wayne Simpson, of Hope Mills, was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals and felony conspiracy. Kylie Lenore Parker, of Fayetteville, was also arrested and charged with cruelty to animals and felony conspiracy.

In August, seven horses were removed from Witts End Quarter Horses as part of an investigation into possible mistreatment. Animal Services Director Elaine Smith said the seven horses removed were at highest risk of injury.

Simpson and Parker were processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center and were each given a $15,000 secured bond. Their first court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
