The North Carolina beaches are attracting a lot of different species these days.

Three great white sharks were recently pinged off the state's coastline. One of the sharks was the largest male shark to be tagged by OCEARCH in Canadian waters, according to the ocean research agency that tags and tracks sharks around the world.

Mahone, who checks in at 13 feet, 7 inches and a whopping 1,701 pounds, was spotted near Fort Fisher. Mahone has been tracked up and down the east coast and was first spotted near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in October of 2020.

Two other large great white sharks were pinged off the North Carolina coast last week:

  • Ulysses, a 12-foot, 990-pound shark who was detected off the coast on April 6
  • Tancook, a 10-foot, 715-pound shark, was pinged on April 9

In March, Tancook was one of two great white sharks pinged in the Pamlico Sound.

OCEARCH is a data-collecting organization that helps scientists track ocean life. A 'ping' occurs when the animal breaks the surface of the water.
