Triangle-area senior citizens were honored Tuesday at the 65th Annual Golden Years Holiday Celebration sponsored by WRAL and Capitol Broadcasting Company.

WRAL anchors Renee Chou, Brian Shrader and Ken Smith emceed the festive event at the Raleigh Convention Center, which included breakfast, gifts and giveaways and live performances.

Some seniors won tickets to see the North Carolina Symphony while others danced to Christmas music and covers of oldies classics like "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" by the Four Tops and "It's In His Kiss" by Betty Everett.

Seniors attending the event are members of Raleigh Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources' Golden Years Clubs for adults 50 and over. Learn how to join an existing club or start a new club.

The very first Golden Years event was held in the WRAL Studios in 1958 and was initiated by Mr. Fred Fletcher, a broadcast executive, entertainer and public servant who, as general manager of WRAL-AM, WRAL-FM and WRAL-TV, helped shape the first quarter century at CBC.

The event was held virtually for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
