Pricier shingles perform best in Consumer Reports tests

According to most experts, a new roof with asphalt shingles should last between 20 and 25 years. This costly and unglamorous renovation is an unfortunate expense that comes with maintaining a home, so Consumer Reports tested asphalt shingles to find the best ones for your home.

Misha Kollontai, a Consumer Reports tester, shared information on three different types of shingles:

  • Three-tab shingles, which are the standard type most people go with
  • Architectural shingles, which offer a bit more layering at a slightly higher cost
  • Multi-layered architectural shingles, which offer significantly more material and a much more layered look, but at a significantly higher cost

The tests compared overall strength, as well as endurance under a variety of stressful weather situations.

Multi-layered architectural shingles came out on top for performance.

A cost vs. benefit analysis for roof shingles

Consumer Reports recommend the Owens Corning Berkshire Collection, costing $225 dollars per square.

A more cost-efficient option is the Atlas StormMaster brand, which offers slate, three-tab shingles that performed very well in Consumer Reports tests and cost only $135 dollars per square.

To save even more money, consider the Tamko Heritage architectural shingle, which costs about $71 dollars per square.

Other considerations when purchasing a new roof

While homeowners may be tempted to put all their research and money into finding a high-quality shingle, be careful to factor hiring a reputable installation contractor into your budget, too.

Homeowners should also check the fine print on the warranty. For example, some manufacturers only provide reimbursement for the depreciated value of the shingles. The best warranties cover full replacement costs for the shingles and labor.
