A third Garner man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a recent shooting in Clayton that killed a teen, police said.

A third Garner man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a recent shooting in Clayton that killed a teen, police said.

Kaylen Marion Middleton, 15, a student at Cleveland High School, was found dead in the 100 block of Blackthorn Court on July 13 after a drive-by shooting outside an apartment complex., police said. Desmond Barnes, 20, also of Clayton, was shot in the foot during the incident, police said.

James Sonnett Brodie Jr., 23, was arrested in Morrisville on Wednesday and was charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was being held without bond in the Johnston County jail.

Joshua Caleb Draughon, 18, and Quashaad Marquis Powell, 19, were arrested previously on the same charges and remain in the Johnston County jail.

All three suspects live on Avery Street in Garner, police said.

Investigators said Thursday that "a conflict over a controlled substance" might be the motive for the shooting.
