The TerraVita Food & Drink Festival is celebrating its 10th and final year this October, and it’s saying goodbye in epic fashion.

Known for bringing renowned chefs, beverage producers, sommeliers, food artisans and food media from throughout the Southeast to Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the surrounding areas, the sustainable, four-day celebration will cover topics ranging from ethical meat and caffeine alternatives like matcha to heirloom grains and classic southern dishes.

Its 2019 lineup includes James Beard award winners, best-selling authors, rising culinary stars, and chefs traveling from South Carolina and Alabama -- but one special dinner will focus on fire.

At the annual Hill Fire Dinner -- which takes place at the Carrboro Town Commons on Oct. 17 -- participating chefs and pit masters will cook over an open flame to feed a crowd station-style under the moonlight. This year’s theme? A barbecue revival with pigs and dessert pies, plus plenty of side dishes to complete the meal.

Here’s a look at the lineup of participants. Their collective resume includes time at 5 & 10, Miller Union, Charlie Trotter’s and Four & Twenty Blackbirds.

  • Justin Burdett of Crook’s Corner in Chapel Hill
  • Wyatt Dickson of Picnic in Durham
  • Teddy Diggs of Coronato Pizza in Carrboro
  • Sam Jones of Sam Jones BBQ in Winterville
  • Norma Kessler of Sweet Arielle in Cary
  • Ricky Moore of Saltbox Seafood Joint in Durham
  • Matthew Register of Southern Smoke BBQ in Garland
  • Ali Rudel of East Durham Bake Shop in Durham
  • Chris Prieto of Prime Barbecue in Knightdale
  • Jake Wood of Plates Kitchen in Raleigh

On the beverage side, Sean Umstead from Kingfisher in Durham will craft cocktails, and James Creek Cider House will serve its hard cider.

The dinner will kick off at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $80 (guests must be at least 21 years old) and can be purchased at terravitafest.com. If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, festival organizers suggest you contact them using the phone number on the website before buying.
