A young girl was attacked by a bear while sleeping early Friday morning at a campsite in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, according to officials.

The 16-year-old girl was sleeping in a hammock near family when the attack happened.

Park officials say the girl received multiple injuries, including head lacerations before the family was able to run the bear off. She was transported to the hospital by the Tennessee Army National Guard Friday morning and her condition is stable.

Two bears were later spotted in the area following the attack. A larger male bear repeatedly approached the area while park rangers attempted to scare it off. Rangers shot and killed the bear after the girl’s family identified the bear as being responsible for the attack.

Forensic testing later confirmed human blood on the bear.

The campsite is located near Maddron Bald Trailhead and will remain closed until further notice.
