We don't have many family traditions but have stuck to visiting Tanglewood's Festival of Lights. The ride to Clemmons is a little over an hour for us. And for years now, we've shared "oohs and ahhs" over the amazing drive-through, Christmas light displays. My daughters love it and have already asked when we're going for the holidays.

Entrance lines can be long on their busiest nights, Thursday through Sunday. The website states that wait times can get up to four hours. I think the most we've waited is two, but it's understandable how it could be longer.

The routine has been the same every year. Once off the exit, we stop for restroom breaks and light snacks (if we didn't bring our own). Portable toilets are available throughout the park, just so you know. Then, we get in line for the excitement.

I suggest having music playlists and other things your kids enjoy in case the wait is long. There's usually a radio station advertised that solely plays Christmas music. It's fun to belt out those holiday tunes for a while. However, if your kids are like mine, that'll get old pretty quickly.

In our back seat, you'll find blankets, gloves, scarves and hats. All the warm things! Once we reach the lights, we like turning up the heat and riding with windows down for better views. The blankets make it extra cozy.

Halfway through the park is a gift shop. It's located at the Red Barn and is filled with all kinds of goodies. Most of them are created by local artists whether food items, crafts or clothing. We've bought a few things over the years but mostly stroll the aisles to see what's new.

The next stop is S'moresville. It's right outside of the gift shop. You can purchase a roasting stick with marshmallows or s'mores kits on-site. Super convenient and festive to warm ourselves by the fire. For an extra treat, purchase a cup of hot cocoa. One year, we brought big thermoses of our own from home.

Last year, the additional attractions were closed due to COVID-19. I'm excited that they'll be open this year. Of course, we'll continue to be safe. Be sure to visit the website for details concerning rules and restrictions.

If you're near Clemmons or just up for the drive, head out there and create a new tradition. Or, visit to make new memories. I think you'll be more than satisfied.

Tanglewood's Festival of Lights runs until Jan. 1, 2022. Times, discounted days and rates can all be found online. Visiting their social media accounts is helpful as well.

Lastly, accompanying our blankets in the back seat are pillows. My daughters have so much fun, they fall asleep on the way home. Happens every year without fail. I expect nothing less from my youngest this time around. My teen, however, is able to hang a bit longer now. Maybe she'll keep me company on the way home.
