Carrboro High students sent home after email bomb threat

A student from Carrboro High School is responsible for a Wednesday bomb threat that evacuated the school, according to police.

The bomb threat was sent via email Wednesday around 9 a.m., threatening an explosive device.

The school moved students and staff to the school's athletic fields before eventually dismissing students for the day.

After 1:30 p.m. the "all clear" was given. Authorities searched the school and found no threat.

Police on Thursday said a juvenile petition has been filed for the student, who is under 18, The student could be charged with making a false report concerning a destructive device, which is a felony.

Carrboro High School students, including sophomore Esu Tamir, said the evacuation was smooth and calm.

"During our first period, we had someone talk on the speakers and they said, 'we’re going to be evacuating,'” Tamir said.

Several students said they were frustrated by the disruption. Police blocked the school's entrances, there was a bomb-sniffing dog, and the day was shortened.

"It's frustrating, a little bit," Tamir said. "I'm pretty sure some people had tests."

Tamir said said she feared what happened could have escalated to similar instances at schools across the country.

It was a stressful situation for senior Nicky Lowry.

“When I heard that, I was like, 'Oh, my god. This is my worst nightmare,'" Lowry said. "I’m just glad we’re able to go home and everyone is ok.”

Lowry's friend, Mitchell Clemmer, felt the frustration of the interrupted day.

“I kind of immediately assumed that someone was just calling in a threat without any intention of following through on it,” Clemmer said.
