It's watermelon season! Grocery stores and markets are full of the juicy fruits - and the State Farmers' Market and Museum of Life and Science are gearing up to celebrate them (but in different ways).

Watermelon Day at the State Farmers' Market in Raleigh comes first.

It's from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, at the market in Raleigh. The free event includes a largest watermelon contest, free watermelon slices, recipes and a visit with the Watermelon Queen. The market is at 1201 Agriculture St., Raleigh.

Next up is Watermelon Day at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. This event is designed so the museum's animals can enjoy a slice - or an entire melon.

It's 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 6, at the Durham museum. It's free with admission, which is $20 for adults and $15 for kids ages 3 to 12.

During the day, the museum will offer watermelon-related experiments in the lab and offer chances for visitors to see museum animals tear open, smash and devour watermelon slices and entire melons. The museum asks visitors to bring a watermelon to add to the fun.
