Smithfield community grieves loss of two children swept away by floodwaters at vigil
Family and friends gathered at the Bright Leaf Flea Market in Smithfield to celebrate the short lives of 5-year-old Alexa Osorio and 4-year-old Abraham Martinez.
Both children were found in a shallow creek near the Neuse River. Search crews found Alexa's body Wednesday afternoon, and Abraham was found Thursday morning.
"I'm a mom, and I can't imagine loosing my kids," said Crystal Morgan, supporter of Abraham and Alexa's family. "If I did I would want people to be here praying and supporting me."
The grieving community released balloons into the sky and lit candles in memory of the two lives that left the community too soon.
The song "Let it Go,"from the popular Disney movie Frozen, played at the vigil. It was Alexa's favorite song.
Nearly $30,000 has been raised in support for Alexa and Abraham's funeral on a GoFundMe fundraiser. The service will be held on Tuesday.
