Cocoa Cinnamon: More than a coffee shop, a cultural hub in Durham

In the heart of Durham, North Carolina, there exists a coffee haven that goes beyond the ordinary. Cocoa Cinnamon, a cozy oasis nestled in the city's west, is a testament to the dedication of its founders, Leon Grodski de Barrera and Areli Barrera de Grodski. Their journey, from a small kitchen in rural Jackson County to becoming a beloved local business, is a remarkable tale of passion, community and the art of coffee.

Officially, the story of Cocoa Cinnamon began in Areli's mom's kitchen on Dec. 14, 2010. It was a modest beginning that later blossomed into a thriving coffee business. In 2011, the couple introduced their concept as bikeCOFFEE in Durham, creating a unique opportunity to engage with the local community. The first official Cocoa Cinnamon location opened its doors at 420 W. Geer St. in January 2013, thanks to the tremendous support and assistance from the community.

Since then, the business has continued to expand its footprint, with additional locations at 2627 Hillsborough Road in 2016 and 2013 Chapel Hill Road in 2017. What sets Cocoa Cinnamon apart is its commitment to authenticity, community and quality. Leon Grodski de Barrera emphasizes, "Coffee is really at the root of our start and our beginning and our craft. And it's also important for us that it doesn't get lost in the question of design or of wonder and in truth."

Telling the story of coffee: A menu with history

The couple's dedication to the origins of coffee and the ingredients used in their signature drinks has allowed them to create a menu that tells the story of coffee's history. This approach has enabled Cocoa Cinnamon to establish strong roots in the Bull City, fostering a sense of community and connection.

Cafe Leader Melissa Ibarra described her signature drink. It's a honey latte with nutmeg and pepper, topped with Pink Himalayan salt and honey drizzle that tells a story of contrast and unity. Ibarra beautifully encapsulates the essence of this unique creation, stating, "I feel like salt is the opposite of honey. For me, this drink represents how you can be two different people, but one person at the same time. It's like a certain crowd knows you one way and others know you another way. But at the end, the ones you consider closer to you know both sides of you."

The business's purchasing decisions prioritize quality and impact, forming strong relationships with their coffee-producing partners worldwide.

Moreover, the purpose of their spaces, as well as the design of their shops and menus, aims to immerse customers in the stories and histories behind the coffee, chocolates, teas and spices they offer. Their coffee offerings and menus are ever-evolving, as they continue to explore the stories, histories and people behind the products they serve.

Roasting with purpose: Little Waves Coffee Roasters

Operating from their Chapel Hill Road location, Little Waves roasts its own coffee and ships it to destinations worldwide. They focus on sourcing, sampling, treating and nurturing relationships with coffee growers and importers, sharing the unique flavors of their carefully selected coffees.
