A singer and songwriter was arrested Wednesday night on his way to Raleigh for a concert.

Nathaniel Rateliff of Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats played at Red Hat Amphitheater Wednesday night. During the performance, Rateliff admitted to the crowd he was arrested in Burke County while driving to Raleigh.

The artist said he almost didn’t make it to the concert, telling the crowd he spent three hours in jail for speeding 84 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Rateliff said he was $120 short of being able to bail himself out, so he called his tour manager for help getting out of jail.

According to a WRAL News producer who was in the crowd, Rateliff explained he is from Colorado, where he said the average speed limit is 75 mph.

Rateliff described his brief jail stint, saying he had to strip naked in front of another man and put on a white and black striped jumpsuit.

WRAL News is working to obtain a copy of the official arrest report.
