The father of an elementary schooler who brought a gun to Middlesex Elementary School last week was charged with a firearms violation.

On Wednesday afternoon, a student told a staff member about another student having a gun. School administrators found the student and took the gun away from them.

Alvaro Cordova-Muniz, 29, from Middlesex, was charged with one count of storing a firearm in a manner accessible to a minor. He received a $2,000 secured bond and has his first appearance in court on Oct. 21.

"We are very thankful that no one was harmed and school staff utilized quick thinking and response to prevent any further incident," the Nash County sheriff's office said in a statement. "There is no doubt that the presence of such a threat in our schools is disturbing."

A juvenile petition has also been filed for the student and charges are possible, according to the sheriff's office.

The age or grade level of the child was not released. No injuries were reported.
