Shaw marching band granted $100,000 from McDonald's

Shaw University is headed to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament, and before the marching band boarded their buses for the trip, they received quite a surprise.

The Platinum Sound Marching band received a surprise $100,000 donation from McDonald's USA.

Raleigh Mayor Mary Ann Baldwin and several local city council members, including Mayor Pro-Temp Corey Branch, were on hand for the occasion.

The money will help the band purchase new uniforms, equipment and other essential items.

McDonald's decided to make the donation while filming the Platinum Sound for a national TV commercial highlighting historically Black colleges and universities.

Terrika Foster-Brasby, a Raleigh native and St. Augustine University alumna, will serve as play announcer and color commentator for the the CIAA tournament that runs from Tuesday until Saturday.
